Margaret's Story

"Madge" was the second daughter born to Elmer and Lillian Smith in Baltimore. She attended school through the third grade. At the age of 21 she married John Louis Staas. For a time Madge was manager of a lunchroom in a decorating company. She was a large woman.

John Staas was born of German immigrant parents. At the age of 21 he served in Troop M 8th Reg Cavalry for a year and a half during the Spanish American War. He worked most of his life as a baker. The couple lived in a variety of rental housing, but spent the last 15-20 years at 4821 Eastern Avenue in Baltimore. They had no children.

John died in 1951 and Margaret died two years later. They are both buried in Baltimore National Cemetery, Section I, Sites13725 and 13426.
